Dry and Sensitive Skin

Dry and sensitive skin conditions are commonly seen in patients who suffer from eczema, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and photoaging.

Some medications prescribed for acne (such as retinoid) or wrinkles can also cause dry skin. Development of microfissures and cracks in the skin in dry skin conditions can serve as portals of entry for skin pathogens, irritants and allergens. Another characteristic that often present is itchiness or pruritis.  Scratching due to  pruritis often worsens the condition .
Common aggravating factors:
1. The use of soaps, detergents and solvents
2. Long periods in water (especially baths and chlorinated swimming pools)
3. Antiseptics and perfumed products such as bubble baths
4.Wool and nylon
5.Fragrances in cleansers, moisturizers
6.Substances causing allergic contact dermatitis (e.g rubber and nickel)
7. Stress
Patients are advised to avoid any aggravating factor. Special skin care regimen (with medication, if necessary) is important to manage this condition. Aqueous cream and sorbolene cream are great moisturizers. They are non-medicated and can be used as soap substitutes.
